Dr. Mark Tichacek

DVM

Dr. Tichacek is a beloved veterinarian that has been serving Carbondale and the surrounding Southern Illinois area for more than two decades. A graduate of the nationally renowned University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. T provides quality medical and surgical care for dogs and cats.

Before moving to Carbondale in 1996 to become the owner of Spears Animal Hospital, Dr. T worked as a veterinarian at animal hospitals including Oakland Animal Hospital in New Jersey; Care Animal Hospital in Arlington Heights, IL; and All Creatures Animal Hospital in Lake Zurich, IL.

When he’s not taking care of the community’s adorable pets, Dr. T and his wife love to get outside and enjoy the scenic beauty of Southern Illinois and its kind-hearted people. An avid sports fan, you’ll also find him cheering on his favorite teams with his two cats snuggled up at his side, tinkering around the garage with his dog in tow, fishing at Little Grassy Lake, or pretending he’s still a teenager and tubing at Crab Orchard with his two grown children.

Our Team

Emma

Veterinary Technician

Emma has been part of the team since October 2021 and works as a non-certified veterinary technician. Her passion for animal care started young—studying pet anatomy at just eight years old—and grew into hands-on experience starting as a kennel assistant in high school. She’s CPR and animal nutrition certified and finds the most rewarding part of her work is helping sick patients recover and go home. Outside the clinic, Emma enjoys reading, hiking, and spending time with her dog (Zoey), snake (Snakey), and three cats—Bix, Marble, and Nimbus. She’s also a graduate student studying animal science and researching working canine nutrition, with hopes of becoming a veterinarian.

Cortney Ford

Veterinary Technician

Her passion for animals began early and led her to pursue an internship with large animals while in school, which laid the foundation for her career in veterinary medicine. Cortney finds the most rewarding part of her role to be building meaningful bonds with pets and their owners throughout all stages of life. She especially enjoys learning new medications and techniques that help her patients thrive. Outside of work, Cortney enjoys raising her children, spending time outdoors, and reading.
